WordPress 7.0 shipped native AI Connectors — a Settings screen where you plug in Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini and get AI features right inside the editor: title ideas, excerpts, meta descriptions, summaries, rewrites. For a platform that runs a huge slice of the web, making AI a first-class citizen of core is genuinely important.
But I've been building AI-first sites for Hampton Roads businesses long enough to tell you what the demo doesn't: AI features are not an AI workflow.
They give you isolated, one-shot helpers behind mostly locked prompts. You can shorten a paragraph or generate a meta description. What you can't easily steer is the stuff that actually matters:
It's the foundation layer. It is not the finished house.
The value isn't "AI can write a sentence." It's "AI understands this brand, this audience, and this goal — and produces the whole page accordingly." That's a system, not a button.
On the sites we build, content generation is brand-aware and tokenized: the palette, the voice, the structural blocks, and the SEO targets all live in one source of truth, and the AI generates against that. Change the brand once and the whole site re-flows. Every section is a real, addressable landmark with its own schema — so Google and AI search can actually cite it. It's multi-tenant, so the same engine runs a dozen local businesses without any of them sounding like the others.
Yes, for what they are. If you're on WordPress and you want faster excerpts and meta descriptions, turn them on. Just know the ceiling: they accelerate tasks. They don't give you a strategy, a consistent brand system, or content built to rank and be cited.
That gap — between "AI features" and "an AI-first system that actually grows a local business" — is exactly the bridge we build. We're the Hampton Roads team doing this work first, and we're happy to show you what the connected version looks like.
Curious what an AI-first site looks like for your business? Let's talk — real people, no jargon.
